Domestic violence survivors pave their own paths

The group of 20 participated in a three-day workshop at Artscape from 8 to 10 August, hosted by the City’s Community, Arts and Culture Development Department. The workshop coincided with the Artscape Women's Humanity Festival, sponsored by the department

The Artscape Women's Humanity Festival uses arts, culture and creativity to encourage debate and dialogue and to raise awareness about societal challenges.

 
The festival celebrated Women’s Month with various workshops, a variety of theatre productions and exhibitions and included a programme on National Women’s Day. The festival showcased the work of individuals striving for an equal society and the respect that all genders deserve.

In addition to providing funding support for the festival, the Community, Arts and Culture Development Department also hosted a workshop, titled ‘She paves her path’.

The three-day workshop covered social and emotional skills development such as promoting inclusivity, understanding GBV dynamics and emotional first aid.

 Participants also attended a number of productions at the Women's Humanity Festival.  

‘What a wonderful opportunity to be a part of this positive festival during Women’s Month! As part of the festival’s programme, the workshop gave participants an opportunity to invest in themselves, to connect, share their stories and support one another. The journey towards healing is long, but we hope that this experience was a useful stepping stone,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Francine Higham.
